SPIFFS President Dr. Rajiv Sahay Celebrates St. Petersburg’s Welcome of Student Ambassadors from Takamatsu, Japan

SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. — July 23, 2026 — Every year, thousands of students participate in international exchange programs around the world, building friendships that often last a lifetime while strengthening understanding between cultures. These experiences do more than create unforgettable memories—they help shape future leaders with a broader perspective of the world.

Dr. Sahay is proud to recognize the cultural and educational significance of the City of St. Petersburg’s warm welcome of student ambassadors from Takamatsu, Japan, as part of the longstanding St. Petersburg–Takamatsu Sister City Exchange Program.

Although attending in his independent civic capacity as President of the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society (SPIFFS), Dr. Rajiv Sahay, Managing Partner and CEO of Sahay Scientific Services, joined Mayor Kenneth T. Welch, city officials, SPIFFS Board members, distinguished guests, host families, and community leaders in officially welcoming the visiting delegation.

The 10-day cultural exchange provides students from Takamatsu with an immersive experience in the Tampa Bay region, including visits to local schools, museums, beaches, parks, and cultural institutions. More importantly, it gives both American and Japanese students an opportunity to learn directly from one another through shared experiences, conversations, and friendships.

For more than six decades, the Sister City relationship between St. Petersburg and Takamatsu has served as a model for international goodwill, demonstrating how communities separated by thousands of miles can remain closely connected through education, culture, and mutual respect.

“As SPIFFS President, I am honored to welcome our students and student ambassadors from Takamatsu, Japan, alongside Mayor Welch, city officials, our Board, and distinguished guests,” said Dr. Rajiv Sahay. “Thank you to our wonderful host families for opening your homes and hearts. May this visit strengthen our sister-city friendship and create lasting memories for everyone. Kangei! Enjoy!!“

Dr. Sahay emphasized that exchange programs like these are investments in the future. By encouraging young people to experience different cultures firsthand, they help foster empathy, understanding, and collaboration—qualities that are increasingly important in today’s interconnected world.

“International friendships begin with personal connections,” Dr. Sahay added. “When students live with host families, attend local schools, and experience everyday life in another country, they gain perspectives that simply cannot be learned from textbooks. These relationships often last for decades and become bridges between our communities.”

The success of the exchange program is made possible through the generosity of local host families who volunteer to welcome students into their homes. Their willingness to share their lives and traditions creates an authentic cultural experience while demonstrating the warmth and hospitality that define the St. Petersburg community.

Community organizations, volunteers, educators, and civic leaders also play a vital role by organizing educational tours, cultural activities, and community events that allow visiting students to experience the rich history, arts, and natural beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

While Sahay Scientific Services is widely recognized for its expertise in indoor environmental quality, environmental microbiology, Legionella risk management, water quality investigations, and scientific consulting, the company also believes that healthy communities are built through education, collaboration, and civic engagement.

“Our mission has always extended beyond science,” Dr. Sahay said. “Whether we’re helping organizations create healthier indoor environments or supporting programs that bring people together across cultures, our goal is to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.”

As a respected scientific leader and active community advocate, Dr. Sahay continues to support initiatives that promote education, international cooperation, and opportunities for future generations. His leadership with SPIFFS reflects a commitment to strengthening relationships that benefit both local residents and international visitors alike.

The arrival of the Takamatsu student ambassadors also highlights the importance of citizen diplomacy—where meaningful relationships are built not only through governments but through everyday people willing to learn from one another.

These exchanges remind us that despite differences in language, geography, and culture, people around the world share many of the same hopes: to learn, to grow, and to build lasting friendships.

As the students spend the next ten days exploring St. Petersburg, participating in educational programs, and creating lifelong memories, they also carry forward a tradition of international goodwill that has strengthened the relationship between St. Petersburg and Takamatsu for generations.

Sahay Scientific Services applauds the City of St. Petersburg, SPIFFS, the Sister City Committee, dedicated volunteers, host families, educators, and community partners whose collective efforts continue to make this remarkable program possible.

Together, they are helping build a future where cultural understanding, respect, and global collaboration begin with the experiences of today’s young ambassadors.
